A footage was posted in Kun.uz in which Nosirjon Egamberdiyev, the mayor of Saykhunabad district which is in Syrdarya province, is beating principals of the district schools for failing to ensure the attendance by teachers of Independence festivities. The incident occurred in late August, but the media became aware of it only now.
The footage shows Egamberdiev, having gathered the principals in a row, beating them one by one. From the words of the mayor it is clear that the principals are being punished for the "poor" attendance by teachers of the festivities on the occasion of the 26th anniversary of Uzbekistan’s Independence.
"Why don’t you respect your own district? Is the Independence of the Motherland not your independence? Not a holiday for you?"- the head of the district is heard yelling on the footage.
According to the source, the Independence celebrations in Saikhnabad district were scheduled for August 25, but later postponed to August 27. Some of the principals didn’t manage to mobilize teachers on the set date, and some were unaware that the holiday was postponed.
It was noted that Sayhunabad district mayor "splashed out anger" at the principals after reportedly being reprimanded by Syrdarya province governor Gofurjon Mirzaev for "holding the festivities below standard".
