About 92% of total water resources, used in sectors of the economy, is used in agriculture sector, according to the statistics.

Within the joint UN program “Strengthening the Resilience Potential of the Population Affected by the Aral Sea Crisis through the Establishment of a Multilateral Human Security Fund for Aral Sea Basin”, number of initiatives to introduce mechanisms to improve the efficient use of water resources have been implemented in the region.

The agreement on cooperation with the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, signed in February 2017, for the implementation of the water project was a striking example.

On 29 November 2017, within the framework of this project, aimed at improving the livelihoods and food security of the population living in territories vulnerable to the effects of the drying out of the Aral Sea by increasing the efficiency of water resources use, a demonstration training was conducted to record and calculate water use in the control centers. On this day, more than 20 dispatchers from 6 departments related to the Quyiamudarya basin management of irrigation systems passed training.

Among the main topics were the rules for keeping a register of water consumption, the procedure for developing seasonal water use plans and the volume limits for water resources. Practical exercises took place in a hydrological facility on the Kattagar Canal and allowed the presentation of methods for measuring water in hydrological posts.

This training has allowed to improve the skills of the dispatch center staff in the management of more effective accounting, as well as the calculation of irrigation water.
