Uzbek Foreign ministry today hosted a meeting with the delegation of Amnesty International led by Regional Director for Eastern Europe and Central Asia Marie Struthers, the Foreign ministry reported.

The sides reportedly discussed the areas of bilateral cooperation.

Marie Struthers and her colleagues shared their impressions of the meetings in the General Prosecutor's Office, the Supreme Court, a number of ministries and departments, and representatives of non-governmental and non-profit organizations.

Uzbek officials were reported to have said that Uzbekistan would not be shying away from discussing any of issues with Amnesty International, and that the country is working to humanize the judicial system, shift away from previous mostly repressive means to counteract radicalism and is focusing on prevention, employment, social rehabilitation, education and upbringing.

The Uzbek authorities expressed their determination to go even further and intend to apply “concerted” efforts in ensuring human rights.
