UNICEF Regional Director for Europe and Central Asia Ms. Afshan Khan will visit Uzbekistan from 17 to 20 July 2018. This is her first visit to the country following her appointment as the Regional Director for Europe and Central Asia in 2017.

Ms. Afshan Khan will meet with parliamentarians, senators, senior government officials and civil society organizations. She will also meet with children directly benefitting from the Government programmes, supported by UNICEF.

This visit will be an opportunity for UNICEF and the Government to agree on areas for cooperation until 2020. Discussions with the Government will focus on emerging priorities, as highlighted in the National Development Strategy of Uzbekistan, and how joint efforts can ensure the rights of the most vulnerable children are protected.

Uzbekistan has the highest number of children in Central Asia. With the ongoing reforms in the country, Ms. Khan’s visit will reaffirm UNICEF’s commitment to delivering on the promises of leaving no child behind.

UNICEF Regional Director will also be discussing the agenda of young people – including the education, employability and empowerment of young girls, which is in line with the vision of the President in the ongoing reforms.
