Ranked 25th Uzbekistan is facing High Water Stress, says a new report that ranks countries and regions on their exposure to water stress, flood and drought risk.
The list, which is mainly led by countries from the Middle East-North Africa (MENA) region.
Of the remaining Central Asian states, Tajikistan and Kazakhstan ranked 51st and 60th, respectively, while Turkmenistan was placed 15th and is among the countries with the Extremely High Water Stress.
The most water-stressed countries are—in order of their ranking— Qatar, Israel, Lebanon, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Eritrea, UAE, San Marino, Bahrain, India, Pakistan, Turkmenistan, Oman and Botswana. These countries are home to a quarter of the world’s population. All of them scored extremely high (over 80%) on WRI’s baseline water stress index.
